Formats FAQ

What format are your books in?

Print

Adobe PDF. Our 121Files are protected in a manner to allow our members the greatest ease of use. It is our goal to not limit how our members use their 121Files while still respecting the rights of Copyright holders. We have enabled all the features that make PDF the best choice for our members. You may highlight, underline, add stamps and notes, save your markups and exchange them with other members, use Bookmarks for easy navigation, print pages, use Adobe’s internal “Read Out Loud” screen reader, zoom in/out, and more.

All 121Files are set to allow the use of 3rd party screen readers. Math and Science textbooks may not be compatible with internal or external screen readers.

If a new file format is ever developed that is better for our members, we will offer it. Our files are digital and 121Books.org is not tied to any particular format. We are tied to our members and place our members first.

Are 121Files accessible offline?

Print

Yes.  Your primary computer is grated Offline Permissions for each 121File opened.  When away from your primary computer, you may use up to 5 computers daily with temporary Online Permissions.

121Files and their Permissions are stored separately.  Therefore, 121Files are completely portable and may be saved onto, and opened from, the media of your choice.  USB Drives and External Hard Drives have unique Machine IDs and are recognized as unique machines/computers and will require Online Permissions even if the attached host computer has Offline Permission.

What are offline/online permissions?

Print

121Files are encrypted PDF files. The FileOpen Security plug-in interacts with our Permission Server to grant you Offline and/or Online permissions.

Offline Permissions are granted for your primary computer. When you open a 121File for the first time, you are required to input your 121Books.org user/pass and have an active Internet connection.  Our Permissions Server will then grant you Offline Permission for 30 days, less if your membership is expiring soon. Opening a new 121File will require access to our Permission Server, which will then reset your 30 day Offline Permissions for all of your previously opened 121Files. If after 30 days you have not opened any new 121Files, you will be required to re-enter your user/pass to re-set your permissions.

We are aware that this may create a potential problem of a 121File not opening if at the 30 day mark and no Internet access is available and no new 121Files have been opened. This would be a concern for students if this happens in the middle of class. To avoid this situation, enjoy a new book or magazine at least once a month.

Online Permissions are limited to 5 computers per day and only required when you are away from your primary computer. Each time you open a 121File you must enter your user/pass and have an active Internet connection. You are then granted temporary permissions that expire when you close Acrobat/Reader. If you reach your daily 5 computer limit, online permissions are denied for the remainder of the day. You are not required to use the same 5 computers on subsequent days.

121Books.org does monitor and track the usage of our 121Files. We basically track each time you interact with our servers by logging user/pass attempts, IP addresses, Machine IDs, and other identifying information only related to our 121Files. We use this information only as a precaution to flag potentially unauthorized usage. 121Books.org is not interested in, we do not believe it is our right, nor would we even want to know anything else about your private activities.

Does 121Books offer Braille texts?

Print

We currently do not offer embossed Braille texts. However our files may be used with digital Braille products. We have not tested this functionality.

But even better, Adobe's internal “Read Out Loud” feature is enabled. So, just sit back and let your computer read to you.
