The 121Files may be downloaded and saved onto the family pc or any media of her choice (cd, dvd, usb thumb drive, etc.). When not using her primary computer (her laptop), she will be prompted for her 121Books.org name/pass each time she opens a 121File in Adobe Reader/Acrobat. Reader/Acrobat will automatically connect with the 121Books.org Permissions Server and grant her temporary permissions.

Online permissions require an Internet connection to “talk” to our permissions server and expire when Reader/Acrobat is closed. Each 121Member has 1 computer with offline permissions, plus a daily limit of 5 separate computers that may receive online permissions. Offline permissions allow the 121File to be opened without connecting to our permissions server.

Don’t hesitate to ask for any additional clarifications – that also goes for any future 121Member or parent who comes across this post.

One 'glitch' that I found is that since my authorized computer has a small harddrive I was trying to save documents onto different USB drives (one for school books, one for light reading, etc). If the documents are on removable media on the authorized computer you will still get prompted for the username and password when you open the file.

My guess is that the system looks at it like when you first downloaded the file and asks.

mornhyland brings up a good point. External storage devices such as harddrive enclosures and usb drives are considered by the host computer as seperate networked machines with thier own unique Machine ID(s), as opposed to internal hardrives or CD drives. B/c they have a seperate Machine ID the 121File interprets this as a seperate computer without offline permissions and requests online permissions. As usb thumb drives overtake cd/dvd media as the preffered media for temporary storage, this will become a larger concern.

If an Internet Connectoin is not available, the 121file may be copied from an external drive to an internal drive and opened from local storage.

To mornhyland: I will add this point to my presentation for our Board of Directors which is sceduled for next week. I, Jonathon, have been tasked to act as an advocate for opening up our 121File protections as discussed in some of your other posts.

Jonathon here.

The meeting with our company Pres. and Board went fairly well. We also brought in our Intelluctal Property Attorney for advise and input.

The convesation boiled down to three main points.
1. The added bennefit to 121Members of providing 121Files in an unprotected format.
2. The potential loss of business to 121Books.org if our 121Collection made it's way to an illeagal download site.
3. Is 121Books.org legally able to provide our 121Files in an unprotected format under the legal stipulations put forth under Sub-Section 121 of U.S. Copyright Law.

We mostly debated points 1 and 2, and it is my OPINION that point 2 will prove to be of greater significace. If we fail to maintain a viable business model the format of 121Files will become irrelevant.

It is also my OPINION that point 3 is not a clear yes/no answer. Our attorney is researching this and will provide his input soon. I am unable to provide additional clarification b/c this is a legal issue and I tend to be overly blunt.

While it is our policy to maintain an openess to change, I (my opinion) do not believe 121Books.org will drop all forms of DRM. I do believe we would implement a new DRM System, if one is ever developed, if it proved to be more benneficial for 121Members.

A final decision is expected over the next few weeks. Any modification to our policy(s) will be noted on the site's Main Page, FAQs, and as replies to Forum questions.
