dump file permission system 5 Months, 2 Weeks ago

Can't we find another file rights granting format? Your current system (FileOpen) is recognized as one of the worst in the industry---with significant holes in its security, This, of course, doesn't even address its frustrating lack of quality and integration with Adobe.
Needless to say, I'm angry. I have one iMac with (usually) works fine. My laptop (Mac) and my tablet (UMPC Samsung) can rarely get permission. right now, I'm on the Web with my Samsung trying to read a book and when I log on (because this is not my primary computer), I get a 'No perms for this...log on...' and I am logged on.
The laptop gives me different problems---always searching for updates to Adobe. I have the current version and have FileOpen istalled and still it won't work. Why can't we change our own permissions and primary computer from 'My Account' settings?
Maybe you could look at Audible and other sites that control access to a limited number of computers. Anything but FileOpen (and I'm not the only one complaining about it from the looks of this forum and several others on the Web).
I need help!
Jim

There have been a few complaints posted and a few more that have come in via email. Almost all were related to tech issues and were satisfactorily resolved. Your two laptops sounds like a tech issue and we will have someone look into it first thing Monday (it is now 2PM Fri).
I am personally unaware of your particular issues being reported by another 121Member. If another 121Member has experienced a similar issue, please post a reply whenever you happen to read this.
About your suggestions:
As a policy, 121Books.org is always willing to consider an alternative DRM system or file format. We are not "locked in to" PDF or FileOpen. We believe these were/are the best all around solutions. 121Books.org even tested dropping all protections, but it proved unsuccessful.
It was decided not to allow Members to modify which computer is registered as their Primary Offline Computer. However, we will reset this upon a reasonable request (new computer purchase, equipment upgrades, etc.)
Maybe we should allow two offline computers. It is very reasonable that a person may routinely use an in-home desktop and a laptop while at school/work/travel/etc. Surprisingly, this has not been requested. If you post a reply making the request, I will bring this up for discussion internally.
We would generally like to avoid applications that use Microsoft's Rights Management. We have also discussed Adobe's own LiveCycle Products. From my understanding, these may be better, but are cost prohibitive. Maybe if we seek advertising revenue or corporate sponsorship(s), the cost will be less significant. Some staff members do advocate this, but 121Books.org is officially reluctant this.
